What to cook other than corned beef on St. Patrick’s day?

Question by Marie: What to cook other than corned beef on St. Patrick’s day?
My husband can’t stand corned beef and I am not much of a fan either and quite honestly, corned beef on St Patrick’s day is an American tradition, not an Irish one For all of the holidays, I like to cook the traditional meals and teach my kids something about that culture, tradition and the people. Dos anyone have any suggestions for a good Irish meal and the recipe. Thanks.

    a good shepherd’s pie and a side of vegetables your family likes. I use ground lamb and beef and a dose of vegemite or it doesn’t taste right to me.

    but you can make it your own way, ground beet, pork, lamb, what ever.

    Soda bread is a staple at the table and it is very easy to make

    Colcannon is a good dish it is basically poundies with greens in it. On halloween it is eaten and you mix a few trinkets in them to tell peoples futures. For example if you find a ring in your portion you will get married soon.

    Shepperd’s pie is good too. It is mashed potatoes over meat filing. If you want to be super traditional try lamb that was often popular back a few decades.

    And of course there are lots of wonderful stews and soups you could make.

    In Ireland St. Patrick’s day is a religious holiday so if you want to celebrate it appropriately then you could go to a mass. There is no wearing of the green in Ireland but you could wear a shamrock to symbolize St. Patrick’s teaching of the holy trinity.

    try Beef & Guenness Casarole… its good, tasty and irish:

    3 slices raw bacon, chopped
    1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    2 pounds beef stew meat
    1-1/2 cups (12 ounces) Guinness beer
    3 cups beef stock
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    12 ounces baby carrots
    4 celery stalks, sliced into 1/2-inch chunks
    1 large yellow onion, peeled and cut into half-moons
    1 to 2 tablespoons flour
    1/3 cup water

    Place bacon in a heavy soup pot or Dutch oven and cook over high heat until crisp. Stir in vegetable oil and stew meat, and continue cooking for 8 to 10 minutes, or until meat is browned.
    Stir in beer, beef stock, garlic, salt, and pepper; reduce heat to low, and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes.
    Add carrots, celery, and onions; stir well, and cook for 1 hour, or until meat is tender.
    Mix flour with water then stir into stew. Cook 1 to 2 minutes, or until sauce is thickened.

    Here is a little known holiday for your children…Cinco De Mayo. It is mostly celebrated in the southwestern states:

    The origination for Cinco De Mayo, The Fifth Of May, commemorates the defeat of the French army by the Mexicans at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but is also celebrated in other parts of the country and in U.S. Cities with a significant Mexican population.

    The battle at Puebla in 1862 happened at a violent and chaotic time in Mexico’s history. Mexico had finally gained independence from Spain in 1810, and a number of internal political takeovers and wars, including the Mexican-American War and the Mexican Civil War of 1858, had completely wiped out the national economy. The victory of the battle at Puebla gave the people pride on their Country and the spirit of freedom.

    You can pick any meat. But I have an awesome recipe for cabbage!

    Stewed Tomatoes

    Fry 5 pieces of bacon in an electric frying pan. Take bacon out and put on paper towel. Place chopped cabbage in hot bacon grease and cook for 25 minutes, constantly turing until it reduces.
    Add can of stewed tomatoes and toss. Cook for 5 minutes. Add salt and pepper and top with crumbled bacon.
