My friend has this recipe for amazing chocolate cookies that are super thick and cakey. The only thing she will tell be about the recipe is that you can make lemon cookies with the same recipe by using lemon extract instead of cocoa powder. Does anyone know this recipe by chance?

My mom used to make something like that called Watkins Prize Sugar Cookies. Years ago, a guy called the Watkins man would go door to door selling anything from muscle linement to the best darn vanilla extract around. Now they have the same stuff in special stores and you have to call the guy. anyway, my mom had a Watkins cook book and these were in it. They seemed to taste better the day after baking and the recipe is large. We never worried about them getting old because we ate them quick enough and they did need to be kept in an airtight container to stay soft and yummy. When dipped in colld milk, they always reminded me of vanilla ice cream Try these.
1 3/4 cup sugar. cream together with
1 cup butter
add:
4 egg yolks
2 whole eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda, (dissolved in a little hot water) this step is important. Dont skip it.
1 cup milk
1 quart flour, sifted 3 or 4 times before measuring
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablspoon vanilla extract(or could use lemon extract if desired.
Mix in order given. Cover bowl and chill thoroughly. Drop by teasoppnfull on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten slightly with the bottom of a drinking glass dipped in sugar. Bake at 375 degree preheated oven till golden brown on edges and puffed up. cool completely before storing. The original recipe called for rolling out and using a cookie cutter but I never tried that since the dough is very soft and I didn’t want to make a mess with it. i have added mixed chopped dried fruit to them or tucked a marachino cherrie in the center of each for Christmas but basically, I just made them the simplest way and we always enjoyed them.
I bet if you added some cocoa you would get your chocolate version and the lemon extract thing is already written in the recipe.
