Question by Virginia S: Polish cookie recipe using cottage cheese, plum jelly & best eaten warm. Anyone know what cookies these are?
My husband remembers a cookie his mother made when he was a boy (1950′s) in Michigan that she got (he thinks) from a neighbor who was Polish. He remembers flaky pastry, plum filling and folded over like a jelly roll; best eaten warm. She passed away in 1994 and now that it’s 2010, he’d like me to find the recipe and make them.

Our family favorite was the following recipe found years ago in Sunset Magazine:

Cream Cheese & Pineapple Turnover – Sunset Magazine

8 oz. cream cheese
1 1/2 cubes butter
1 2/3 c. flour
1 can chunk style pineapple, drained

Beat butter & cream cheese until smooth. Mix in flour. Gather into a ball, refrigerate at least 45 minutes to 2 hrs.

Heat oven to 425°. Divide dough into 3 parts. Roll one part into a square 10” x 10”. Cut into 4 squares (5” x 5”).

Repeat.

Place approx 2 Tab.fruit cocktail on ½ of @ square. Fold over diagonally, moisten edges, press together, prick tops, place on greased baking sheet.

425° 15 min. (light golden brown)

12 turnovers
