Question by Sara E: How do you melt the chocolate for chocolate chip cookie bars?
I want to make the chocolate chip cookie bars with the hard 1/4 inch of chocolate that is melted on top and then chilled in the refrigerator. I cant find a recipe and I don’t know the best way to melt the little chips. I think my mom may have put the broil on till it melted.

you can melt them in the microwave but stir every 10 seconds or so and watch them really close or they will burn. or use a double boiler, a bowl or pot in side another with hot water in the bottom one and the chips in the top one over medium high heat on the stove top. good luck.

Use a double boiler. If you don’t have one, a metal bowl that fits over your saucepan will work. Just don’t let the bottom of the bowl touch the water in the pan and don’t let the water come to a boil. Melt the chocolate slowly. TIP: add a small amount of butter, oil or shortening (about 1 tsp.) This will help the chocolate become very smooth and it will add a nice sheen.

sprinkle the choco chips on the top of the cookie bars right after they come out of the oven. You may put them back in for about a minute, spread the chocolate with spatula if desired.

Most of the time they will melt from the heat of the cookie bars just out of the oven. Sprinkle them on fairly thickly, single layer.

Then allow the whole thing to cool down. cut the bars and then you can refrigerate if you wish.

I am providing you the recipe below.
    1 c. sugar
    1 c. brown sugar
    2 c. flour
    1 c. oats
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. oil
    3 eggs
    1 c. chocolate chips

Now see how you can melt chocolate. There are some tricks to successfully melting chocolate. Never allow any water to come in contact with the melting chocolate, unless the chocolate is being melted in a large amount of water (2 tablespoons water per ounce of chocolate is the minimum amount). Chocolate should only be melted over low heat. The microwave is a good appliance to use because the cooking time is so controlled. White chocolate or vanilla milk chips are the most difficult to melt. Too much heat will make this type of chocolate seize. Melt chocolate chips just like chopped bars.

I hope if you follow this simple rules then you will end up meeting your requirement.
