Baking cookies……?

Question by Elle’s Mommy: Baking cookies……?
I’m trying to make cookies for my baby shower as favors. I have cookie cutters in the shapes of a onesie, rattle, pacifier and bib. When I bake them, they lose there shape. Is it because I’m using store brought cookie dough and not cookie dough made from scratch? I was originally using chocolate chip but now I’m thinking of doing sugar cookies. Please help, tell me why they are spreading, and do you have a recipe for sugar cookies and decorating?

You need to use sugar cookie dough. Get icing to decorate~!

INGREDIENTS
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

Even pre made sugar cookie dough should work better, the choc. chips were melting and causing the loss of shapes.

Make sure the cookies are very cold before putting them in the overn. I would recommend cutting the shapes out and then placing them in the freezer for ten minutes before putting them in the oven.

Yes…try doing it by scratch. I have a great recipe that is so moist…

    1 cup shortening
    1 cup sugar
    2 eggs
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    3 cups unbleached white flour
    1/2 teaspoon soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt

Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and sour cream. Mix well. cover bowl, and chill dough at least 30 minutes (if you don’t do this the dough will be too sticky to work with). On a floured surface (and floured hands), roll out dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake @ 375 for 8 minutes. Do not overbake. They will be too crunchy if overcooked.

BTW- where did you get the cookie cutters? Great idea!
